Making a Self-Care Box

Text

When you’re in crisis, stressed, or overwhelmed, it can feel impossible to figure out what will help. A self-care box is a ready-to-go kit that holds the things that bring you comfort, grounding, and support. When hard moments hit, all you need to do is open it.

Step 1: Find Your Box

Choose something to hold your items:

  • A shoebox, tote, basket, or small bag works perfectly.

  • If you want, decorate it to make it personal and comforting.

Step 2: Add Crisis Essentials

Include things that support you in moments of high stress or emotional overwhelm:

  • A list of grounding exercises that work for you (so you don’t have to remember them under stress). [See our page on grounding exercises here]

  • Breathing or calming technique cards (store-bought or homemade).

  • A list of trusted contacts and crisis numbers.

  • Letters, cards, or printed messages from loved ones.

  • Photos of people, pets, or places that bring comfort.

  • A copy of your crisis plan. [See how to make one here]

  • Practical items like tissues and bottled water.

  • A short self-care checklist (eat, hydrate, stretch, step outside).

  • A list of your favourite things or happy memories.

Step 3: Include Nurturing Items

These are things that help you feel cared for:

  • Tea, hot chocolate, or another comforting drink.

  • Snacks that don’t need refrigeration.

  • Body lotion, bubble bath, or a bath bomb.

  • Cute stickers, positive affirmations, or a small journal.

  • A comfort item like a plush toy or soft blanket.

  • Fuzzy socks or slippers.

  • Lip balm or other small self-care items.

Step 4: Include Distraction Tools

Distractions are valid when you need a break from overwhelming emotions:

  • Puzzle books, word searches, or crosswords.

  • Colouring books and pencil crayons/markers.

  • A favourite novel or light read.

  • Jigsaw puzzles or other small activities.

  • Notes to remind yourself to watch a favourite movie or show.

Step 5: Add Grounding Items

Support all your senses to stay present:

  • Stim toys like stress balls, tangles, or fidget spinners.

  • Scented items like essential oils or a favourite perfume.

  • Music playlists or voice recordings from loved ones.

  • Sour candies or spicy snacks for taste-based grounding.

Step 6: Finish and Personalize

Once you’ve gathered your items:

  • Step back and admire your self-care box.

  • Add or swap items over time to keep it useful and comforting.

  • Remember: it doesn’t have to be expensive. Dollar store finds and homemade items work perfectly.

Your self-care box is yours. Personalize it to your needs. The goal is to make support simple and accessible for your hardest moments.
